Formation

Deciding which verticals the group enters, and forming the arms that build in them.

Formation is the decision to open a line of business, and the machinery that follows it. Companies are incubated at 4.ventures, which is the canonical incubator for the group and holds one published term sheet applied to every company formed. A vertical's Ventures arm may form alongside it, or on its own where the deal flow is genuinely the vertical's; both are formation, and both can hold a position in what they form. What a vertical earns is a Capital arm, which needs a balance sheet rather than a pipeline. Gord Enterprises is not an incubator: it holds enterprises — operating businesses the group owns outright — which is a different act from forming one.
